Over the years, I have built upon my childhood learnings and have come to understand more fully the gift of Forgiveness. While Christianity teaches that we are saved and have eternal life because Jesus the Christ suffered for our sins in Gethsemane, died on the cross, and was resurrected, I believe differently now. After all I have seen, heard, learned, and felt, I now know that that teaching is only the beginning of the truth. I believe that I am “saved” through my own actions, choices, and how I live my life. I believe that Jesus came to earth to show me – all of us – of what humanity is capable. He came here to teach us Love, Peace, Wholeness, and Remembrance. He came here to show us the way to BE the Light of Love. He came here to show us how the soul lives on, needs no body to do so, and that how we live in this life sets the tone for our next.

There has rarely been a time that I have listened to this song without tears streaming down my face. Today, as it shuffled into place in my iTunes line up and the first notes rang out, I got chivels and there was no way that I could stop the tears that poured forth. At this time, more than any other in history, FORGIVENESS is so vital for humanity.

When we focus on who is wrong, who has been wronged, and who is doing the wrong, we add so much energy to those situations, increasing the energy of wrongness, magnetizing it to generate more of that.

Forgiveness isn’t for “making it okay.” Forgiveness doesn’t exonerate the wrongdoing or the wrongdoer. Forgiveness is FOR GIVING YOU FREEDOM. It liberates the person who is willing to forgive. It changes nothing other than clear the ties that bind us to the past. The past does not serve us, so why hold on? It is time to let it go so that we can move forward. As long as we expend our energy focused on the past wrongs, we are stuck there. Nelson Mandela said it best, “As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.”

This video gives the story behind this song and it is a powerful experience to witness. I invite you to watch it all the way through. At the end, when Matthew begins talking about forgiveness, if you’re uncomfortable with the Christian point of view that Jesus saved us, replace his words in your mind with something that matches your beliefs because the underlying and enduring message of this song is a universal truth: “Forgiveness. It’ll clear the bitterness away, it can even set a prisoner free. There is no end to what its power can do. So, let it go and be amazed by what you see through eyes of grace: The prisoner that it really frees is you.”

In this time of great need, I pray continually that I will liberate myself, that I will remember the Light, that I will be a conduit for that Light, and that I will perpetuate Love into this world. Please join me in that prayer.

FORGIVENESS
-by Matthew West © 2012

It’s the hardest thing to give away
And the last thing on your mind today
It always goes to those who don’t deserve

It’s the opposite of how you feel
When the pain they caused is just too real
It takes everything you have just to say the word…

Forgiveness
Forgiveness

It flies in the face of all your pride
It moves away the mad inside
It’s always anger’s own worst enemy
Even when the jury and the judge
Say you gotta right to hold a grudge
It’s the whisper in your ear saying ‘Set It Free’

Forgiveness, Forgiveness
Forgiveness, Forgiveness

Show me how to love the unlovable
Show me how to reach the unreachable
Help me now to do the impossible

Forgiveness, Forgiveness
Help me now to do the impossible
Forgiveness

It’ll clear the bitterness away
It can even set a prisoner free
There is no end to what it’s power can do
So, let it go and be amazed
By what you see through eyes of grace
The prisoner that it really frees is you

Forgiveness, Forgiveness
Forgiveness, Forgiveness

Show me how to love the unlovable
Show me how to reach the unreachable
Help me now to do the impossible
Forgiveness

I want to finally set it free
So show me how to see what Your mercy sees
Help me now to give what You gave to me
Forgiveness, Forgiveness
